As you know we are always at the forefront of development for libraries and this exciting package from MLS is another example of this commitment. Pocket Librarian is a suite of computer programs designed for the Pocket PC platform.
The package includes an Opticon H19 series scanner and 4 programs designed to make your life easier and save you valuable time:
ATTENDANCE
This can be used to monitor attendance for a variety of purposes such as school lunches, book clubs, school trips etc. The software uploads enrolment data from Eclipse or Junior Librarian and allows you to scan bar codes or search for pupils. The information is then downloaded into your library management software from where statistics about attendance can be generated.
STOCK SCAN
This replaces the need to use a portable bar code reader for stocktaking purposes. The Opticon windows mobile device includes an in built laser scanner allowing you the freedom to walk around your library shelves scanning bar codes of books and then download the information into the Junior Librarian or Eclipse StockCheck module. Pocket Librarian is not just a data capture unit (as with most portable bar code readers). The software included will provide istant feedback about the resource you have scanned to ensure you are right on top of your stocktake.
MOBILE LIBRARY
A copy of your library catalogue can be taken with you wherever you are. If you are asked whether you have a book in stock by a particular author or on a specific topic, you will be able to carry out searches similar to those that you can do on Junior Librarian or Eclipse. This will also allow you to renew, return and issue books for pupils who may stop you when you are away from the library. No more printing off lists of resources prior to visiting a book supplier. You'll be able to search your catalogue whilst on site to ensure you make the right buying decisions.
QUICKSTART
Using data from DISCOVERY, this program takes retrospective cataloguing to another level. QuickStart allows you to move around your library scanning the accession number and then the ISBN of the books on your shelves. You can also add your own Classification if required. Once you have scanned all the stock, the information is downloaded automatically into Junior Librarian or Eclipse. All the main bibliographic details including keywords and suggested Dewey will be added for you. Only those records that are not matched need to be added manually. Testing of this module has proven it is possible to catalogue up to 1000 books per DAY.
